On Sunday 25 April we celebrate the 58th World Day of Prayer for Vocations, which offers us an opportunity of prayer, meditation and deepening of the gift of Jesus’ call, a gift that invites us to follow him in a fascinating and intimate evangelical path which becomes a mission to the Church and the world.

In all the churches, including the Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padua, studies, prayer groups and testimonials will be held to live to the full the spiritual content of this particular Day.

The Feast of the Translation of the Relic of the Saint, commonly called “The Feast of the Tongue”, which will be held on Sunday 14 February in our Basilica recalls an event which occurred 758 years ago in St. Anthony’s most holy site: the chapel which guarded our beloved Anthony’s mortal remains.

St. Anthony’s friars pray for those who are sick and suffering

Saint Anthony is the Saint of Miracles, and those who are sick lovingly place their trust in his intercession.

If, among your family members or your friends, there is someone who is sick you may send us their names: on 11 February, World Day of Prayer for the Sick, we friars will pray for their healing.

In the Holy Mass we will celebrate in the Basilica we will invoke upon them the blessings of Saint Anthony and God’s grace.

A Stolperstein by artist Gunter Demnig placed in front of the Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padua remembers Father Placido Cortese, director of the Messenger of Saint Anthony during the Second World War

On 21 January a Stolperstein by artist Gunter Demnig was placed in front of the Basilica of Saint Anthony, precisely on the corner between Piazza del Santo and Via Orto Botanico. The Stolperstein was placed there in memory of Father Placido Cortese, the friar of the Basilica and director of the Messenger of Saint Anthony during the Second World War.

A New Year lies ahead of us. What can we wish for in this 2021 which has just begun? That we can sense the presence of God at our side in every moment: in moments of joy and suffering, in health and ill-health.

It is precisely this certainty that is our peace!

Let us commit ourselves to overcoming the selfishness within us; the desire to think only of ourselves. Let us overcome the barriers of suspicion and fear; let us always fight for a better world.
